The largest shelter for the homeless in Poland in situated in the Cracovian district of Nowa Huta, on Makuszyńskiego street. More than a hundred men live there by early autumn, with that number rising to three hundred during the winter months. 90% of men staying here have a vodka problem, 80% have been previously sentenced; either for unpaid alimonies or domestic violence. The youngest hosteller is 24, the oldest – 79. Two conditions during their stay at the hostel are abstinence (if only on its premises), and meetings with a social worker. These “Homes” are a living testament to an age gone by.
